ABOUT

Doug Fanning is a passionate architect/designer/creator whose unique work is aptly described as “tough-beauty”. Like the classic American muscle cars, Doug artfully shapes metal with sheer willpower and constant experimenting to turn the mundane and brutish into graceful beauty. Doug immerses himself in his Red Hook Brooklyn studio surrounded by bars and sheets of various metals, a plethora of creative ideas and experiments, and an aura that anything and everything is doable. Out of this cauldron of possibilities emerges a magnificent marriage of architect, design, and physics in the form of clean, fluid, daring pieces of art.

Doug has a master’s degree in architecture from Columbia University and has taught at The Parsons School of Design, The University of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, and The University of Pennsylvania. In 2019 he made his Salon Art + Design debut under Maison Gerard. Benoist Drut states, “Maybe because Douglas was trained as an architect, I have rarely seen such a thirst for perfection, attention to details and subtlety. He has acquired a mastery of all metals pushing the boundaries of physics to achieve what may appear effortless and simple at first, but indeed is the result of years of refinement and a love for craft and process. It is an honor that Doug has chosen Maison Gerard to represent and showcase the best of his artistry.”
